For over fifty years, Bob Weir has been one of American rock's most respected statesman, someone who was a part of the San Francisco rock scene as it grew from a handful of bluegrass and blues bands into a fully-fledged music revolution. In the decades since, he has remained a bearded fixture in rock music both on the road and in studio, cementing the Grateful Dead's legacy as one of the most important bands in rock history. Now for the first time, Weir shares his full story with the world, detailing his time with the Grateful Dead and the long strange trip of his life. From meeting Jerry Garcia in a dusty music store in 1963 to the endless tours during the band's heyday to Garcia's untimely death forty years later, Weir's story spans the decades, offering a look at the personalities, creativity, and drugs that became the hallmark of the Grateful Dead and their fabled live shows. Taking readers inside the Dead's music like never before he dissects his role in the band, delving into the band's often misunderstood dynamic and discussing the delicate balance that allowed them to form their most legendary jams. More than just a portrait of a band, Weir goes inside stories that defined a generation-from Ken Kesey's acid tests to Weir's friendship with Neal Cassady to the Summer of Love to the endless vault of live shows that would become perhaps the band's greatest legacy. He also delves into his friendship with Jerry Garcia, a man he met when he was still in high school who would become his closest friend and spiritual guide until Garcia's death in 1995. Complete with photos from the Grateful Dead vault, this memoir from one of rock music's most important voices will be the must have book for any classic rock fan and the perfect memento to mark the 50th anniversary of the cultural revolution.

BOB WEIR is a singer, songwriter, and guitarist, best known as a founding member of the Grateful Dead. He is currently on tour with his band Dead and Company, which includes two former Grateful Dead members Mickey Hart and Bill Kreutzmann, and John Mayer.

As to "Jerry Before the Dead." Yes, it got delayed for a lot of reasons, but the release date, I am now told, is in May. 5 LPs in vinyl, 4 CDs. A sampling of all of his various folk and bluegrass groups from 1961 to 1964, including songs from the only known tape of Bob & Jerry in 1961. I and a guy named Brian Miksis produced it. Some really wonderful stuff, and I urge you all to run out and buy it when you can -- keep an eye on the Jerry website and they'll tell you how.

06/27/17 - From a Reddit AMA with Trixie Garcia and Marc Allan [of Red Light Management]:

MarcAllan

I should first specify that our role is specifically related to Jerry's work outside of the Grateful Dead. We have a wonderful relationship with the team who represent the Dead as well, which is a huge bonus!

The vault has a good amount of material from throughout Garcia's solo work. If I had to point out "holes" we don't have as much mid 80's (think 83/84) material in the vault, but there is still a good sampling. There isn't much missing once DAT players came onto the scene, as by that point Jerry's production team was recording pretty much on a nightly basis.

Luckily, there is also a wealth of material that Jerry and Merl did together as well as a good amount of mid and late 70's material.

I can answer that we do have a copy of 8/10/91 in the vault, as well as June 1989 at Eel River...maybe we can do something with both of those shows, a French's Camp box of some sorts. Would y'all dig that?

[Zakir Hussain] on his most recent collaboration with Mickey Hart and recording new pieces for an expanded 25th-anniversary edition of Planet Drum: "It’s been very busy working on a new record. Universal Music has decided to reissue it and wanted to create a buzz about it, and asked us to work up some new material. So we were doing that, and in the process, Mickey and I had the bug bite us, to start an entirely new record, so we are co-producing this new CD. Again, it’s about rhythms and the technology that exists today, and how both exist in the same world at the same time. So we are trying to find new ways to express time, as far as rhythms of the world are concerned."

05/12/16 - From a recent David Lemieux interview:

David Lemieux: There were some tapes that were missing from the Dead's archive from about 1976, '77, and '78, and those tapes have always existed, they've just not been in the Dead's archive, and we've now been working with the people who own these tapes and collaborated with them to have them returned to the Grateful Dead's archive, which, as an archivist and a Deadhead, is about as exciting as it gets, because it means, as an archivist, these tapes are moving back into the archive, they're going home, and that's nice to look on the shelves now and see these previously big gaps in the physical space in the archive now filling back up, and as a Deadhead, knowing how exciting this music is.

Matt Bialosuknia
What is the status of more Jerry Garcia Band/Garcia Saunders/Garcia Grisman vault audio releases?

Trixie Garcia
we have a schedule, every year there will be a few more releases from the vault. 2016 already has two great selections lined up, I cant tell!

• • • •

Dominic Jules DeVito
Another question for you, Trixie: Any chance the recordings that were released under the "Pure Jerry" imprint could see the light of day again, perhaps as official GarciaLive releases? Those old Pure Jerry CDs are pricey now!

Trixie Garcia
we are working on getting everything back out in one form or another... this is long term

Colin Parsons

08/18/15 - From Relix:

As we begin our exploration of the [Grateful Dead's] 50 year anniversary, it seemed fitting to discuss The Warlocks’ participation at the Acid Tests with [Ken] Babbs. Although Kesey never completed his own memoir of this era before he passed away in 2001, Babbs is currently working on such a tome. He explains, “It’s not a novel, and it’s not a memoir. It is what you call a ‘burlesque,’ and the definition of a burlesque is ‘a historical occurrence embellished with inventions and exaggerations.’ This is perfect for me because it’s all about the adventures with Kesey, the Pranksters and our friends.”

[Trixie Garcia is now] on the board of the Grateful Dead with the band's surviving members—Lesh, Bob Weir, Bill Kreutzmann and Mickey Hart. In many ways, she has become Garcia's avatar. . . She's excited that M.G. is writing a book. She's relieved that her mother finally gets to participate. Trixie's also had a hand in planning the Dead's 50th anniversary shows; some of the proceeds will go to restoring the Jerry Garcia Ampitheater.
07/03/15 - From Facebook.com/DeadBase50:
Bob Gassel
So is this [Fare Thee Well] mini tour technically the first "Grateful Dead" shows since the 1995 Soldier Field run?

DeadBase 50
Yes, I would say so. Unlike in the past where they have specifically used different names like "The Other Ones" or "The Dead", this configuration has no other name and is widely being referred to as "Grateful Dead".
07/02/15 - From The Guardian:
Even though members of the Dead have had other musical projects, from the Other Ones and Ratdog to Kreutzmann’s Billy & the Kids, it took 20 years for them to feel the time was right to perform together again as the Grateful Dead.

Kreutzmann says he felt not doing so short-changed the band’s fans. As more time stretched between their last performance and this weekend, the market has been flooded with substitutes, including a sprawling subculture of Grateful Dead cover bands, many of whom fill theatres performing entire shows from the past. One player, John Kadlecik, of Dead tribute band Dark Star Orchestra, even proved he had the mettle to substitute for Garcia in Further, a band fronted by Dead founder members Bob Weir and Phil Lesh.

Even though he sees the cover bands as “a compliment” to the strength of the band’s songwriting, Kreutzmann says the Fare Three Well shows are meant as a final testament by the original band itself.

“Fans deserve to hear great music again and this is the last opportunity for them to do it, plus I still like making music with these guys,” Kreutzmann says. “We’re not a cover band. We are the band.”
06/26/15 - The July/August issue of Relix will feature "a variety of pieces on the Grateful Dead's 50th anniversary."

To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Grateful Dead, the four original members — Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann, Phil Lesh, and Bob Weir — will reunite at Chicago's Soldier Field, nearly 20 years to the day of the last Grateful Dead concert, which took place at the same venue. “Fare Thee Well: Celebrating 50 Years of Grateful Dead" will occur over three nights on July 3, 4, and 5, 2015, marking the original members' last-ever performance together. 11/30/14 - On today's Tales From The Golden Road broadcast David Gans and Gary Lambert talked about film footage that could be used for next year's Grateful Dead Documentary Film; David said Amir Bar-Lev has some unreleased B&W footage from the first European trip in 1970, and Gary contributed some of his "home movies" from 1969 (we know Lambert filmed footage of the July 1969 shows in Queens). This discussion is at about 20:30 into the broadcast.

05/19/14 - From the Chicago Sun-Times:

[Trixie Garcia says,] “I’m seeing a lot of kids wearing Grateful Dead shirts in the audience now, and I think it really shows how timeless the music is.” It’s one of the reasons she recently chose to relaunch JerryGarcia.com to help bring the music into a new era, right before the Grateful Dead’s 50th anniversary next year.

Plans to rerelease all of the studio albums on vinyl (Garcia’s eponymous solo album was the first reissue on Record Store Day this year) and an official documentary that follows on the heels of Bob Weir’s own film are in the works to celebrate the anniversary.
04/10/14 - Dave’s Picks Vol. 10 is a 3 CD set from 12/12/69.

04/02/14 - The Other One: The Long, Strange Trip of Bob Weir, a documentary directed by Mike Fleiss, will be shown at the Tribeca Film Festival and the San Francisco Film Festival in April. According to TribecaFilm.com and sffs.org, "performance footage with and without the Dead; home movies; and interviews with [Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Mickey Hart, Bill Kreutzmann, Sammy Hagar, and Trixie Garcia] blend to form a film that is part biography, part Grateful Dead history and part portrait of a cultural moment." Also, co-producer Justin Kreutzmann talked to Jambands.com about the film last fall:

Justin Kreutzmann: It’s a Bob Weir documentary directed by Mike Fleiss who did the Ozzy film (“God Bless Ozzy Osbourne”) and is a big Deadhead and real sweet guy. He wanted to do this movie. He thought Bob was a great subject to tell Bob’s story and Bob had such an interesting life with the Grateful Dead and all the stuff that happens around Bob’s life before and after. We’re putting it together and it’s turning out really cool.

It’s interesting exploring somebody who you’ve known all your life but actually getting down into it. Before I came down to L.A. , I was sitting around Bob’s house with him and I was like, “Okay, Olompali, that was before the Haight or is that after…?” It’s all the stuff I’d always heard about but I never really…I wasn’t writing a thesis on it. So, I never really asked or put it together, and then you get all these stories and all this stuff that you may have kind of heard about it or not heard about at all. So, it’s interesting.

The film is really good and it’s gonna be really great by the time people get to see it. I’m really happy Bob will have this document so people can…and it’s a movie. It’s not gonna be a four-hour concert thing. People can get Bob’s story from Bob himself, his family and friends for 90 minutes and enjoy it.

The book's title is THIS IS ALL A DREAM WE DREAMED: AN ORAL HISTORY OF THE GRATEFUL DEAD.

03/11/14 - From Relix:

a new cache of [soundboard tapes of the Grateful Dead originally recorded by Betty Cantor-Jackson] has been unearthed and a plan is underway by Dark Star Orchestra guitarist Rob Eaton, who has painstakingly restored many of the boards, to complete the job and then facilitate their return to the band. Eaton hopes that a series of official releases might follow that will also yield a small royalty to the woman who recorded the reels and then lost them due to her own financial hardship, even if Deadheads owe her a debt of gratitude.
11/13/13 - From the New York Times:
What he learned from the “12-12-12” experience, [documentary filmmaker Amir Bar-Lev] said, was that as a director, “you have to have an idea for a story, but you can’t be intrusive and you have to be very open to what’s being presented to you — it’s improvising.”

Perhaps that is why, Mr. Bar-Lev said, he next wants to make a documentary about the Grateful Dead.
10/29/13 - According to Dead.net, "For those of you who can't stand the suspense, news has come in about Dave's Picks Vol. 9, the first of our four releases for next year. We're very pleased to revisit the Wall Of Sound era, with a complete show that took place on May 14, 1974, at Adams Field House at the University of Montana in Missoula, the Grateful Dead's only appearance in the state of oro y plata."

10/17/13 - Fall 1989: The Long Island Sound (a 6 CD set from 9/5/89 and 9/6/89) by the Jerry Garcia Band and Weir/Wasserman will be released 12/17/13.

If you've been curious about the subscribers-only bonus disc, this one is the stuff of lore as well. Like Dave's Picks Volume 6, the last-ever Grateful Dead show at the Fillmore Auditorium - 12/21/69, was once missing reels, but we've acquired the elusive first reel to go with the end of the show that we've always had. This jam-packed CD, featuring almost 40 minutes of never-before-heard music, includes one of only three versions of 'Smokestack Lightning' from 1969."

11/09/12 - The makers of Jerry: The Movie now "anticipate finishing the movie by September 2013."

10/25/12 - According to David Lemieux, "if you're inclined to pick up Dave's Picks 5 and/or the 2013 subscription, you're in a for a huge treat. The first show, 11/17/73 at UCLA, is a major, heavyweight Grateful Dead show. . . We don't have much planned beyond DP 5, but I've previously hinted about a major batch of 1969 and 1970 tapes that were recently returned, and we hope/expect to get some of that out in 2013. I'm not trying to be coy or cryptic on the contents and possibilities, but we're in the midst of backing these tapes up and sorting through them. Once this is complete, we'll know what we have. What we've heard so far has shocked us in its excellence in terms of performance quality, song list, and sound quality. So, if you like peak-era Grateful Dead, with huge versions of major songs that you (and we!) have never heard before, this lost-batch of tapes is for you. Expect news on that within a few months."

08/01/12 - From a Relix.com interview with David Grisman:

Owsley Stanley III recorded all of the Old and in the Way shows from 1973. To date, I believe only three have been released: Old and in the Way, That High Lonesome Sound and Breakdown. Who has those reels and might we hear more archival releases from that ‘73 run?

I have most, if not all, of the live master tapes, including the Boarding House shows as well as quite a few others. I hope to release the complete Boarding House recordings, in their original sequence, and have had those ready to go for quite some time. Now, with our new series of High Definition downloads at Acoustic Oasis, those tapes will sound better than ever.

Throughout [1990-1995], you two recorded 40-plus sessions at your home studio not to mention live dates. While there’s been a healthy amount released—seven albums and a smattering of tunes on various collections—and a forthcoming album of alternative takes of Garcia/Grisman, what else is waiting in the wings?

Well, I plan to issue expanded versions of all the projects with extra takes that have never been released—all in hi-definition—starting with the first Garcia/Grisman album, with its companion alternate collection with great previously un-issued takes of every tune. There are also the live shows that we played together, but I don’t have copies of most of that. . .
08/01/12 - Alternate Garcia / Grisman is now available on Acoustic Oasis.

08/01/12 - Keystone Companions: The Complete 1973 Fantasy Recordings (a 4 CD set) by Saunders & Garcia will be released 09/25/12.

05/05/12 - From PigpenBlues.com:

“Pigpen…a blues Singer”

With EXTREME passion and enthusiasm we are embarking on a Feature Film about Ron "Pigpen" McKernan, co-founder of the Grateful Dead, his love for the BLUES and who HE was as a person, as a contributor to the blues, to the Grateful Dead, and to the lives of so many.

A longtime Grateful Dead fan, Fraser started seeing shows in the mid-seventies at the Winterland in San Francisco. Like many “next generation” Deadheads, he was intrigued by the folklore from the “Good Ole Grateful Dead” days with Pigpen. Fascinated by the edge and rebellion Pigpen brought to the Grateful Dead’s music, look, and spirit, the filmmaker strove to find out more about the man. What he uncovered was the story of a short but incredible life. Pigpen was a man full of heart, love, and laughter, a beautiful soul uninterested in racial or class divides, the trappings of fame, or in living anyone else’s idea of a conventional life. He always valued the chance to play for a few close friends over fame and celebrity.

Pigpen’s exposure and introduction to R&B at such an early age developed him into being a ground breaking and influential talent of the 1960's. Heavily influenced by the friends he made and their sounds: including Muddy Waters, Lightnin’ Hopkins, Big Mama Thornton, John Lee Hooker,as well as Vince Guaraldi, Elvin Bishop, and countless others. He was self-taught to play the harmonica, keyboards and guitar and at a very young age he became the front man for one of the most well-known, psychedelic, controversial, and prolific bands of our era... the Grateful Dead whom he shared music, love, and life with to the end.

Pigpen died at the age of 27, making him a member of the "Forever 27 Club", all great musicians that have died at the young age of 27 including Janis Joplin, whom he had a relationship with, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Kurt Cobain and recently Amy Winehouse.

A story, movie, book, solely on the life of Ron "Pigpen" McKernan has not been done to this date. With an EXTREMELY LARGE fan base and following of the Grateful Dead, there are the fans who loved Pigpen, who love the blues, who would like to see this film made! What is the one comment we have heard over and over during our endless research about Pigpen from those who were close to him is "It's about time". Well, the time is here, and this is your Film!

It is very clear Ron McKernan was a very much loved man, contributed his talents in a manner that has truly touched the souls of many. Through this film, it is our desire to show those who did not know him who Ron was, and to let those who did reflect on him once again.

The project concept was developed and is coming to life… A timeline has been set, interviews, contacts and conversations with people surrounding his life have been done, discussions about licensure and copyright have begun, and with your help, we can make this happen and honor a man that deserves nothing but.

"Pigpen was and is now forever one of the Grateful Dead"

The Film:

“Pigpen…a blues singer” is a special interest bio-pic about the life of Grateful Dead co-founder and member, Ronald Charles “Pigpen” McKernan.

Set in 1973 during the last week of his life at his home in Corte Madera, California. Pigpen, recovering from his illness, lonely and calling for visitor to just hang out with him to play music or chess and at the time not touring with the band, takes us on a journey reflecting back on his own commitment to his life as a blues-man, as the heart and soul of the Grateful Dead, and remembering moments in his life through photographs, writings and music that developed his desire for the blues, his love for his friends and family and the continued inspiration he gives to others.

As we take this dreamy non-linear journey of Pigpen’s life; one thing becomes very apparent, Pigpen had an extraordinary musical experience in his short life of 27 years. Having raided a bank vault of books, quotes, folklore, and personal stories; we find that not only was Pigpen bringing traditional blues (psychedelic soaked as it may have been) to a new, mostly white audience, but he was also becoming the Spirit of the Times themselves.

His exposure and introduction at an early age to R&B and the Blues not only came from his father, an electrical engineer at Stanford who during the late 1940’s and early 1950 was the only white Disc Jockey using the name of “Cool Breeze” to spin the blues at an all-black radio station in the Bay area; but at age 12 during a time in this country, before desegregation, Pigpen, known as “Rims” then was crossing over literally to the “wrong side of the tracks” to learn the blues, drink Thunderbird wine, write lyrics and poetry, and learned to play the harmonica and the guitar with an older black blues enthusiast, Tawny Jones who with Lester Hellum, a saxophonist, took Ron to see T Bone Walker.

In the end, “Pigpen…A Blues Singer” is the story of a young man who chose to be “a victim of the whole blues trip”, live the life of a blues singer, who captured the attention of his audiences through his ability to entertain, to sing from deep within his powerful soul, and to touch the hearts of those who knew him.

No story of redemption, no big comeback, no farewell concert. Just Ron “Pigpen” McKernan hoping for a few folks to sing for, to come by, to keep him company, but settles for a neighborhood stray dog, recording the Apartment Solos, searching for that one last great blues tune he knows he has inside himself, and reflecting on the memories and moments in his life.
01/06/12 - From JerryMovie.com:
After a lengthy pursuit of the rights, renowned documentary filmmaker, Malcolm Leo and veteran personal manager John Hartmann have secured an agreement to produce a feature length documentary on music icon Jerry Garcia. Leo, whose previous works include films on Elvis Presley, Crosby, Stills & Nash and The Beach Boys will direct. Hartmann, the former manager of Peter, Paul & Mary, Crosby, Stills & Nash, The Eagles, America, Poco and others, will produce with Leo.

The movie will be built around a three hour conversation Mr. Leo conducted with Garcia in 1987. The historic interview was shot on negative film with studio quality sound and lighting.  The footage presents a compelling portrait of America’s guitar hero at the height of his legendary charm, brilliance and success. The movie will blend an unprecedented amount of never before seen performances, documentary footage and rare home movies.

Leo/Hartmann Productions provided a short film clip to the San Francisco Giants for Jerry Garcia Day last summer. Forty two thousand fans were enchanted to see Jerry speaking to them about San Francisco, the city he loved. The producers were given full access to film Annabelle Garcia, Jerry’s eldest daughter, throwing out the first pitch. The Giants went on to win the World Series.

Members of Grateful Dead legacy band, Furthur, sang the national anthem and a Guinness World Record was set as thousands of fans played “Take Me Out To The Ball Game” on kazoos. The entire celebration was caught on film by co-producer Justin Kreutzmann and will be included in the movie.

Leo and Hartmann are currently in discussions with representatives of various financial and distribution entities regarding the funding and exploitation of this historically significant motion picture. Jeff Silbermann of Century City law firm King, Holmes, Paterno & Berliner is handling the legalities.

The Dead finished its marathon with Buddy Holly's "Not Fade Away," something the 30,000-plus tye-died fans in front of the Odeum stage Saturday certainly hope won't happen to the group's renewed association. Bassist Phil Lesh previously told Billboard.com that he has no plans to tour again this year with any of his groups, while drummer Bill Kreutzmann said Friday that the four principal members hadn't spoken about future plans yet. But as Lesh brought the band back for its encore on Saturday (technically early Sunday morning), he offered some hope by telling the crowd "We hope you're having as much fun as we are...We hope to come back again."
